Last year at school we were asked to choose a theme for a project that would last the whole year.
The project I came up with consisted of somethings that I was familiar with, and some things that I had never done before:
- First of all, design a concept car of my own. Not something too flashy and futuristic, but a car that I would like to be seen in, and most important, a car that would be believable. A car that could actually exist.
- Second, make a 3D model of the car. While it wasn't my first time making a 3D model, it was my first try at making a car using 3D Studo Max.
- Third, and since I love graphic design, design promotional posters for the car. This consisted of creating a name, making a logotype, and creating the actual posters for the car.
- Fourth, create two videos using the 3D model of the car: one promotional video, and a more funny and personal one. Now this was something I had never tried before and it was a great experience, and even though it was a hard task for one person only, I can say that they came out pretty well.
(Some minor steps were obviously left out of the list; things like creating the scenes for the videos)
It was a great experience, and very rewarding; especially considering I got the highest grade possible.
This one is just a generic render of the car model, made in 3D Studio Max. When I first thought of the project, I considered making a high-polygon model, but decided to go with low-polygon, since the other option could delay the project.
The car has roughly 12000 polygons, 2x1024² textures and 3x512² textures, all made from scrath using Photoshop. My goal was not to make an optimized model with the lower polygon count and fewer texture maps possible, but to model a good looking car, regardless of its polygons or textures.
Very sorry about the late reply (personal life's keeping me away from the site).
This is one of the nicest comments I've gotten on this site. Thank you very much for the input, it means a lot! Especially because you sound like you know what you're talking about!
I really tried hard to make it as subtle as possible, without making it too bland. It was definitely one of the most satisfying projects I've worked on, that's for sure!
I'm just a car-geek. I eat, dream, and build cars. Your concept was the first car design on DA that I've seen that isn't meant only to look pretty on a wall. Most of the cars on DA are useless show cars or ideas that have no practical application in the real world. Yours does. In fact there have been cars put into production similar to yours. The Autozam AZ-1 for instance. Its a Kei car from Japan that is the world's smallest sports car.
I say keep up the good work! Maybe try your hand at a sports sedan next?
The "down to earth" approach was my main goal with this project. Like you said, most concept cars are way to extravagant to ever make it into the production line. I wanted to do it a bit differently. Something that people could actually imagine as a real car, driving down the street.
Like I said, it was a lot of work, but worth every minute spent on it. And comments like yours make me appreciate it even more.

Thank you! I'll have one sent to you if it ever goes into production!
