My second entry for the "Bring Your Vision to Life" competition.
I wasn't really going to participate in the competition at first, but after some thought I decided it would be a great opportunity to improve my painting skills and practice some more.
During the conception stage, I decided not to seek visual inspiration, especially in the competition gallery. Instead, I listened to a lot of music to get ideas for my entry. As usual, it was a Nine Inch Nails' song that sparked the idea, this time being We're in this Together. This isn't really an illustration of the song, like I've done before, it's rather just a concept that is loosely inspired by a couple of lines from the song.
When I started to work on the first sketches, I decided I would be giving the scenery some personality. With that in mind, I went with some a stylized look for the buildings: very thin, but still tall with traces of Art Déco inspiration.
For the general atmosphere, I wanted a sterile look. No direct sunlight, no water, no fire and lots and lots of dust and fog.
The painting only started when everything was drawn on paper. It was a great experience, apart from the fact that the 3GB of RAM on my computer proved too little to handle the PSD file, so I had to work on three files separately.
I'm definitely happy with the end result as, technically, it's one of my best pieces so far. The deadline meant that some details had to be spared and some areas didn't get as much attention as they could have had otherwise, but I can't say I'm not proud of my job!
I hope you like it too, please leave some feedback, I'd love to hear your opinion.
Great ambience and use of grain for this! I think the angle has been perfectly chosen with the perspective to keep the eye moving through the details. The only issue I can see is the heads seem a little too large for the bodies...but proportions aren't my strong point.
Anyway, I love the rendering. This looks like it was done with 3D software...I'm not surprised you managed to overload 3GB RAM with it.
Thank you very much for the great comment! (And sorry about the late reply...)
The perspective sure was a challenge, but it was very gratifying to work with. Still, drawing people in perspective can be very tricky, so that's probably why they don't look that good. A tight deadline didn't help either; I didn't have much time to play with ideas and proportions.
Still, my main focus was the ambiance, and I was pretty happy with the results!
Oh, boy. This reply is several months late, sorry about that!
Anyway, thank you so very much for the great comment! I really wanted to have some sense of height and depth, hence the vertical layout and the thin buildings. Glad to see it affects you.
best way for looking some inspiration its music
really great work (:
Music really is one of the most inspiring artistic mediums, for me. Most of my pieces were influenced by it, one way or another.

I simply love how the green stands out from the various shades of grey, as well as the textures and details!

You are very welcome
